Faith Like Abraham’s: A Journey of Unwavering Trust in God
Faith like that of Abraham is the ability to trust God completely, even when His promises seem impossible. Abraham is considered one of the greatest models of faith in the Bible. So, how can we cultivate faith like Abraham’s? Below are a few thoughts that have come to mind, though they are by no means exhaustive.
Faith Doesn't Happen Automatically. To have faith like Abraham, we must recognize that it doesn't come naturally. It must be developed, nurtured, and guarded over time. Faith isn’t something that magically appears—it’s a journey of growth.
Faith Grows Through Experiences with God. As we read the story of Abraham, we can clearly see how his faith grew through his ongoing relationship with God. His trust deepened as he encountered God in various circumstances.
Partial Obedience and God's Grace. Abraham’s willingness to leave everything behind and follow God's command is another key aspect of his faith. Living among pagans with their idols and false gods in Ur, Abraham obeyed God’s call to move to a new land. However, his obedience was partial—God told him to leave everything and everyone behind, but Abraham brought his nephew Lot along. This reminds us that even when we falter in our obedience, God’s grace covers our imperfections and helps us grow.
Abraham’s Struggles Show His Humanity In his journey, Abraham shows us that he was not without flaws. Like us, he faced fears and struggles. For instance, he lied to Pharaoh about his wife, Sarah, to protect himself. He made mistakes, but his faith grew through those mistakes. Abraham’s journey illustrates that faith is nurtured through obedience, repentance, and trust in God. Like him, we will stumble, but if we allow it, God will use our mistakes to strengthen our faith and trust in Him.
Greater Blessings Come with Greater Tests. One important lesson from Abraham’s life is that the greater the blessing, the greater the testing. God doesn't test us for His own benefit—He is all-knowing—but rather, He allows tests to help us understand what we truly believe. Do we genuinely trust in His promises, or is our belief just head knowledge? Tests reveal the depth of our faith and refine us to become more like Him.
The Foundation of Faith Hebrews 11:6 states: “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” This is the foundation of all faith: Do we believe that God is who He says He is?
As we continue on this journey of faith, let us always seek to know God as He truly is, trusting Him more deeply with each step.
